Short answer: all the protein.

You’re probably not looking to buy a point-n-shoot, but if you are, $224 for a Canon S90 is just stupidly good.

Fitocracy - TheGreatCthulu →
Yes, I am obsessed with Fitocracy now. But, c’mon, you get to see insane shit like this, where somebody breaks the point system by swimming the English Channel.
elle-oh-elle asked: How do you feel about vegans? Let it all out.
Anonymous asked: What are your thoughts on ketosis? Not in terms of dieting or losing weight, but for an overall healthy feeling?
An email from mom.
I think I am old. SNL was very funny last night. Justin Timberlake did a Bon Iver parody whom I know nothing about but I still laughed. And the musical group was Sleigh Bells? Wow, I feel 100 years old.
Love, Mom

Anonymous asked: Dear Diet Driver, Is there such thing as consuming "too much" protein? I typically consume 75-100 grams per day. But a source on the internet recommend I consume 45. That seems low. Maybe, my reality is just off. Thanks, Jiggles

Robert Reich: Manufacturing Illusions →
But American manufacturing won’t be coming back. Although 404,000 manufacturing jobs have been added since January 2010, that still leaves us with 5.5 million fewer factory jobs today than in July 2000 – and 12 million fewer than in 1990. The long-term trend is fewer and fewer factory jobs.
Even if we didn’t have to compete with lower-wage workers overseas, we’d still have fewer factory jobs...
Fat Loss and Running →
Obviously getting in shape for a sport, even if it’s something that sounds harmless like a half-marathon, is just not compatible with dieting to drop fat. And yes, I’m writing this specifically to target the group of people that want to get in shape while training to run in a marathon. It’s an admirable goal, but realize that it is not compatible with weight loss.
Dietary fiber: Eat more of it →
Actual, quality diet advice.
A quick addendum, though: “more fiber” does not mean those awful Fiber One/Fiber Plus products. The piece talks about the importance of soluble fiber, which, if you check out the nutrition stats, is lacking in that crap. It’s all insoluble fiber. And by insoluble fiber, they mean wood pulp.
Digressionary rant, as I don’t want to finish this...

I have to say, I was worrying about Apple’s “openness”. Broadly: were they going to go App Store only on the Mac, lock the UNIX underpinnings down hard, and make it a real pain in the ass to do what I somewhat condescendingly in my head refer to as “real work”?
I think, with this, and the Gatekeeper system, that they really are keeping the Mac “open”....

Moment of sincerity: Illini Media has meant a lot to me over the years. It set me on my career path, and I made friends there who I still cherish.
So, as tomorrow is payday, I’ll be donating.
(Small town oddity: why is the Daily Illini’s website better than the townie paper’s?)
Diane Rehm Show: The Gluten-Free Craze →
Most researchers believe celiac disease affects less than one percent of all Americans, yet as many as 25 percent of us seek out gluten-free foods. Many consumers believe eliminating wheat from their diet may improve their digestive health, help them lose weight, or relieve joint pain.
Gluten-free is the new fat-free. Or low-sodium. Or no high-fructose corn syrup. Or sugar-free. Or whatever...

Myths About Megapixels (...And, Does the D800 Have... →
I’m going to cut through the morass of minutia-based arguments about pixel dimensions, filter geometries, and Airy disks and lay it out in very simple terms. A 16-megapixel 35mm-sized Bayer array sensor is going to resolve around 50 line pairs per millimeter (lp/mm). A 36-megapixel sensor will resolve around 75 lp/mm. Even mediocre 35mm lenses will hit 75 lp/mm at some aperture over some...
Sensor Size Matters — Part 1 →
And part 2.
If you’re at all curious about sensor sizes in cameras, which you probably aren’t, check out these 2 articles. Some of the best summaries I’ve ever read.
And as a bonus, check out the easter egg section at the end of part 2. You know that Lytro camera that’s getting so much hype? Yup, tiny, tiny sensor, meaning pretty much everything you take with it would be...

Low-carb, high-ish protein peanut butter fudge. →
I thought I’d try this out for my higher fat, non-lifting day dessert. And they turned out great. Sweet fudgy goodness. (Maybe too sweet; I think I went too heavy on the Splenda.)
My one small modification to the recipe: I used fat-free cream cheese. So, if you get 20 pieces out of this recipe, each piece comes to 95 calories with my mod. Not bad.

That’s quality yoga skepticism. Key takeaways:
Yoga isn’t cardio, so don’t imagine it’s good for your physical health or losing weight

Take for example last week’s New York Times. I’ll present them in picture form down below, but among them they include the ingredients: Beet greens, Swiss chard,...
